Stop Them if They Get In
Once your house has been broken into and you are home, what do you do? Call the police if there is time. [That's the advantage of an alarm system that calls the police.] But first, be prepared to deal with an intruder. Hand guns are good if you are an accomplished shooter, but most of us would be better off with a shotgun. If a perp hears you racking a round on the shotgun they just might think that they should leave. Hit that "Home Defense Shotgun" button on the menu at the left. The big disadvantage of firearms is cleaning up the mess, both legal and in the house.
A very directional self-defense spray that will not effect you is good. MACE 80272 Pepper Gel Home Defense and the MACE Pepper Guns are that way. Mace cleans up with soap and water. Stun guns are great, except that you have be up close to use them. That's OK on the street because the situation is up close to start with. Tasers are basically single shot; we haven't seen the Taser revolver YET. Knives are another up close weapon, and they are messy. Many things about the house can be used for self-defense: pots and pans, knives, boiling water, hair spray, manual can openers, baseball bats, bottles.
