The Police are Unlikely to Be There to Protect You
We must handle the attacks of criminals on our own. We cannot even count on having time to call 911, let alone getting a timely response. According to FBI response time statistics:
- For crimes of violence 26.6% of police responses were within five minute or less.
- 10.8% of response times for property crimes were within five minutes.
Relying on 911 can be Fatal
Example 1: In 2002 a woman in Chicago called 911 three times. By the time the police arrived, 17 minutes after her initial call, she had been murdered.
Example 2: In March 2008 a West Covina, California a woman was murdered as she was calling 911. The perps were eventually arrested.
Most Likely You'll Face a Hardened Criminal
In the nation’s 75 most populous counties, ... More than 75% of felony defendants had a prior arrest history, with 53% having at least five prior arrest charges. ... Percentages are so abstract. Let's look at numbers.
Nearly 650,000 people are released from state and federal prison yearly and arrive on the doorsteps of communities nationwide. A far greater number reenter communities from local jails, ... According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) over 50 percent of those released from incarceration will be in some form of legal trouble within 3 years.

That's 325,000 perps freshly cleaned up and rested from living on our tax dollars in prison, returned to us to commit more murders, robberies, assaults, rapes, etc. each year. When religious organizations do such things the press is up in arms over it. But do we hear anything from the the press when the Government does it? NO! Write your state and federal representatives.
Case in point, murderer Lovelle Mixon of Oakland, CA. Released on parole in Nov. 08 murdered three police officers in Mar. 09. Is the press in an uproar about Secretary of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation [CDCR] Matthew Cate? NO!. The CA Office of the Inspector General had the effrontery to issue a press release saying that the CDCR had handled Mixon correctly while he was on parole. That may be, but what about the nameless/faceless CDCR parole board that released the monster. What does Mr Cate have to say to the families of the murdered police officers? He doesn't have anything to say on his CDCR web page. And if armed, trained LEOs have trouble with this sort of person what can you, gentle citizen, do? Meanwhile the East Bay (sic) Community portrays Mixon as a victim. Go figure.
In 1988 then governor Governor Deukmejian paroled Philip Garrido after serving 12 years of a 50 year term for raping Katherine Callaway Hall. While on parole in 1991 Garrido, and his wife, abduced Jaycee Lee Dugard, then 11 years old, and held her captive in his backyard for 18 years, fathering two children by her. She was finally found in 2009. Read more
In 2000 Mike Huckabee, then governor of Arkansas commuted the prison sentence of Maurice Clemmens. The commutation lead to the parole of Clemmons. In November 2009 Clemmons murdered four police officers in Seattle. After the murders in Seattle Huckabee said "it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State." YES and the failure starts with Huckabee. Huckabee has not apparently expressed any regret at his part in the "failures." Clemmons was not Huckabee's first "mistake". As governor he secured the release of murder and rapist Wayne DuMond who then repeated his crimes when released. In that case too Huckabee blamed the "system."
Huckabee is running for president in 2012. A person with such a weak sense of responsibility should not receive your vote.

The Police May Opt to Not Protect You
We cover this in the self-defense law section. There we see that a woman's children were murdered because the police chose to not respond.
For my own case this website suffered a Denial of Service attack. I cleared up the problem and blocked the perp. I was out $500. I then found the origin of the attack on my own. I found that the Secret Service was in charge of dealing with such cases. That took some work. I turned over my data to the Secret Service. They looked at it and said that they did not want to be bothered. I realize that they protect the currency and the President. I am not a big time political contributor; so I did not expect "My Representative" to do anything for me. So I felt forced to drop it. But there's another case of selective enforcement.
Self-Defense Works
There is myth that complying is the thing to do. This may work with a simple robbery situation, otherwise not at all. You can never tell when a robbery can morph into something else.
What you must Know and Do
For self-defense a couple of things are very clear and simple
- The attacker has the advantage of being the first to attack and of having done this sort of thing before. They are trained and likely took advanced training in prison.
- The person being attacked has to react faster than attacker to remain safe. This achieved not only with raw speed but by drilling.
- The person being attacked needs to train in the use of their weapons. People buy pepper spray all the time but they rarely buy training tools.
- The person being attacked as an element of surprise because the attacker will not expect a counter-attack. FBI statistics show this to be effective.
- Attackers are typically younger and have an advantage over older people who are typically weaker and slower.
- To equalize the attack situation citizens need to be armed.
- Citizens have to train in armed and unarmed self-defense. Even if a citizen, or a police officer, is armed, at the onset of a close range attack they are likely to not have time to draw their weapon.
