Real World Self-Defense
The instructors are of a school of the martial arts that combines the best of traditional Okinawan karate along with practical police and military experience.
Arts of Self Defense Chief Instructor Cliff Downey is a Fifth Degree Black Belt; he achieved his First Degree Black Belt in 1968. Mr. Downey is a retired Fair Lawn, NJ, police officer with 25 years of service. He served on the Fair Lawn SWAT team for 10 years from the time it was setup. For 10 years, and while with the Fair Lawn department, he was a fire arms and unarmed self-defense instructor at the Bergen County Police Academy. Prior to his police work he served in the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also taught self-defense to Marine Corps reserve units. Cliffard Downey
Chief Instructor Downey is assisted by Assistant Chief Instructor Tom Puleo and Instructor Al Connelly, both Black Belts at Arts of Self Defense.
